EQ-I 2.0
Developing Emotional Intelligence in Education
Introduction:
Emotional Intelligence (EI) is essential for success in leadership, learning, and personal contexts. The EQ-i 2.0 assessment tool is grounded in psychological research and provides educators and learners insights to measure and enhance EI (Bar-on, 2006). This blog provides an overview of the benefits and challenges associated with using the tool.
Information:
App/Tool Name: EQ-i 2.0
The EQ-i 2.0 is a psychometric assessment tool developed by Multi-Health Systems, Inc that measures emotional intelligence across five composite areas and 15 subscales that include including self-awareness, interpersonal relationships, and decision-making (MHS, n.d.). The tool provides the great benefit of increasing self-awareness across all categories and allowing respondents to understand exactly where they are and where they may need to improve in areas where they find themselves challenged. This is beneficial across educational learning and leadership improvement contexts. Students can increase their emotional intelligence to develop strategies for interpersonal communication and productivity and educators can learn where they can use their strengths for engaging with learners and where to focus their efforts for personal growth. It is available only through MHS-certified practitioners with education and certification for practitioners costing $1500.00 to $3000.00 and assessments costing practitioners $76.00 for Workplace reports, $114.00 for Leadership reports, and $282.00 for Group reports. Workplace and Leadership EQ 360 reports are also available for purchase by certified practitioners for $278.00 for workplace reports and $358.00 for leadership reports. Certified practitioners administer the assessments and then debrief the reports with respondents. Each practitioner determines their price point for administering and debriefing reports
Summary:
This tool is scientifically validated for improving emotional intelligence in leadership and educational settings. The cost of certifying practitioners, purchasing reports, and compensating practitioners for administering the assessment and debriefs could make using the tool cost-prohibitive if used by smaller or underfunded programs. However, schools can partner with practitioners to offer scholarships or other innovative solutions to overcome this challenge. As a consultant and executive coach, I have used this to raise individual and group emotional intelligence awareness and coach groups and individuals to communicate better, develop interpersonal relationships, and manage conflict. It can be used as a pretest and post-test in educational contexts.
